What’s better than sipping on a cold, refreshing drink while soaking in the great outdoors? Hosting an Oktoberfest beer garden-themed party, of course! If you’re someone who enjoys easygoing get-togethers, good company, and, of course, delightful brews, you’re in the right place. I’m here to help you plan a beer-tastic bash that your friends will rave about for ages. So, dig out those picnic blankets, don your favorite beer-branded tees or lederhosen, and let’s dive into the world of beer garden parties!

Choosing the Perfect Venue:

The first step to a fantastic beer garden party is finding the ideal location. Look for a spacious backyard, a nearby park, or any outdoor setting that offers plenty of room for your guests to relax and enjoy. Remember, the more greenery and fresh air, the better! Encourage your guests to embrace the spirit of Oktoberfest by dressing up in traditional German attire or wearing their favorite brewery t-shirt.

Setting the Beer Garden Vibe:

Creating a cozy and inviting beer garden atmosphere is key! Hang patio string lights or fairy lights over the seating area to create a warm and inviting ambiance. Scatter a few potted plants and flowers around, and if you have access to wooden beer barrels or rustic beer coasters, they’ll add to the authenticity. Set up a backdrop with an alpine mountain scene for guests to take memorable photos against and create an authentic Bavarian atmosphere with blue-and-white banners, pretzel garlands, and Oktoberfest-themed table settings.

Want to go all out? Hire a live band or set up a playlist of traditional German folk music to get everyone dancing and in the festive mood!

Beer Selection for All Tastes:

A successful beer garden party is all about the brews! Provide a variety of beers to cater to different tastes. From light lagers and hoppy IPAs to smooth stouts and fruity ales, offering a diverse selection ensures there’s something for everyone.

Don’t forget to include some non-alcoholic options for those who prefer a different choice. A few of my family’s favorites are:

  • Clausthaler Original Non-Alcoholic: This brand is known for producing high-quality non-alcoholic beers, and their Clausthaler Original is one of the most popular choices. It is praised for its balanced taste and rich flavor, reminiscent of traditional German lagers. (this is my husband’s recommended NA choice)
  • Erdinger Weissbier Non-Alcoholic: Erdinger is renowned for its wheat beers, and its non-alcoholic version is no exception. It offers a wheat beer taste with hints of banana and clove.
  • Krombacher Pils Non-Alcoholic: Krombacher is a well-respected German brewery, and its non-alcoholic Pilsner closely resembles its alcoholic counterpart.

Remember that taste preferences are subjective, so it’s a good idea to try a few different options to find both the alcoholic and non-alcoholic German beer that suits your palate best. If possible, check local beer shops, supermarkets, or online retailers to see which German beers are available in your area and read customer reviews for a better understanding of their overall quality and taste.

Beer Tasting Flight Fun:

Encourage your guests to explore various beer flavors with a beer-tasting flight. Set up a tasting station with small glasses or cups labeled with the beer names. Provide a beer-tasting scorecard so everyone can rate their favorites and chat about the flavors like true beer connoisseurs!

Toast with “Prost!”: Teach your guests the German word for “cheers,” which is “Prost!” Encourage everyone to raise their glasses and say it before taking a sip.

Snack and Munch:

Delicious snacks are a must for any beer garden party. Offer classic beer garden fare like bratwurst, sauerkraut, pretzels, peanuts, and popcorn. Get creative and whip up some beer-infused snacks, such as beer cheese dip or beer-battered onion rings. Offer a variety of giant pretzels with different dipping sauces for guests to enjoy. And don’t forget your sweet tooth-treat your guests to delicious German desserts like apple strudel, Black Forest cake, or marzipan treats.

The combination of great beer and tasty snacks will keep the conversation flowing!

Beer Garden Games:

What Oktoberfest would be complete without entertaining beer garden games?! Cornhole, giant Jenga, and beer pong are crowd-pleasers that will get everyone involved and laughing. Need a few other unique entertainment  ideas-try these:

  • Create the traditional German game called Hammerschlag: All you need is a few nails, a hammer and an old log. I promise it will be a crowd favorite!
  • Yodeling Contest: Have a friendly yodeling contest and see who can deliver the most spirited performance.
  • Beer Stein Races: Host relay races where participants carry beer steins filled with liquid (or water) without spilling.
  • Pumpkin Decorating: Incorporate some fall elements into your party with a pumpkin decorating station. Especially good for giving the littles something to do.
  • Beer Stein Painting: Provide plain beer steins and painting supplies so guests can get creative and personalize their own souvenirs.
  • Oktoberfest Trivia: Create a fun trivia game with questions about Oktoberfest history, German culture, and beer-related facts.
  • For a more relaxed vibe, set up a board game station with classic favorites or break out a deck of cards for some casual card games. (check out this post for some of my favorite board games)

Hosting a beer garden-themed party is all about embracing the relaxed and friendly ambiance of a traditional beer garden. With the right planning, decor, beverages, and activities, you can easily create a memorable experience for all your guests!

Gather your friends, raise your beer mugs, and toast to friendship, and good times. Cheers to the joy of a village beer garden gathering – prost!
